The Lady Byng Trophy

So the Lady Byng trophy is a trophy that is given to the player that “adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability”.  Well it turns out our very own Brad Richards is now a finalist for the award!!!  He has already won the award once back in the 03-04 season, but I think its time for him to win it again!!  He is up against two other players, Pavel Datsyuk (who has won it 4 times) and Martin St. Louis (who has never won).

If you look back at all of his seasons he really does show exceptional sportsmanship.  He is a gracious loser and even more of a gracious winner, and I have never seen him play a dirty game!  During his three years with the Stars he has been in the penalty box only 20 minutes!!!  If you really think about that number it is astonishing!! Well I think it just goes to show that Richards really is just a stand-up guy!!  I really hope he wins the award this year, the winner will be announced at the NHL awards at the end of June.

You know what makes this really cool is that normally people who are really attractive tend to be real douche bags and Richards seems to be a good guy who just so happens to be really hot!!

Here is Richards with the award 6 years ago, when he won it while playing for Tampa Bay.  Damn he is sexy!

So for those of you who don’t know the Texas Stars is a team that plays in the AHL, the AHL is basically the minor league of hockey.  Every team member of the Dallas Stars that has been “brought up” mid-season came from the Texas Stars, like Maxime Fortunus and Warren Peters.  Every AHL team has a corresponding team in the NHL that they feed players into.  So the Dallas Stars use the Texas Stars to basically condition inexperienced players so that they will someday be ready to play in the NHL.

So anyway after the Dallas Stars did not qualify for the playoffs the GM decided to move Jamie Benn down to the AHL so that he could help the Texas Stars in the playoffs (in the AHL they play for the Calder Cup).  Well it turns out he is doing a great job there as well!!!  The Texas Stars are doing a great job and have now acquired a spot in the western division finals.  Now the Texas Stars have been doing a great job all season but now that Benn is in the mix he has already gave the team a lot of great goals!!

What makes this even more impressive for the Texas Stars is that this is their first year as an AHL team.  Because it is their first season they are on a probationary year just so that they can prove their worth.  I think its safe to say that they have more than accomplished that this year, considering they stand a good chance at heading to the calder cup finals!!

So after the Stars were eliminated from playoff contention I switched my hopes to three other teams.  For the western conference I was pulling for the Colorado Avalanche.  Why?  Mainly because a few years ago the Avalanche were something to be feared, but in the past 6 years they haven’t lived up to their legacy.  After not making playoffs last season I was going to pull for them this year in the western conference.  For the eastern conference I was pulling for the New Jersey Devils and the Buffalo Sabres.  I’ll be honest the main reason I was pulling for the Devils is because Zach Parise is totally hot!!  But the Sabres I actually want to do well, because I think they have a great defense especially with Ryan Miller in the net.  To me they are a team that truly has a defense that works well with the goalie.

Well so these were the teams I was rooting for, and it turns out that all three of them aren’t doing the best in their quarterfinal match-ups.  The Avalanche are tied in their series with the Sharks (2-2).  The Devils are behind in their series against the Flyers (3-1).  Lastly, the Sabres are behind in their series against the Bruins (2-1).  It looks as if the Avalanche and the Sabres still have a fighting chance but I think the Devils are probably going to be finished soon.  Hopefully, the Sabres and Avalanche can pull off some more wins so that they make the semifinals.

If you are interested in watching the playoff games, most of them are shown on the “VS.” network and if not there they are probably being shown on the NHL network.  The Sabres play tonight at 6pm CT, the Avalanche play tomorrow night at 9:30pm CT, and the Devils play tomorrow night at 6:30pm CT.  So tonight I think I’m going to watch the Sabres and hopefully they can pull off a win!!

Also, just to reiterate Zach Parise is sooooo HOT!!!!!

So these are the top 5 best looking jersey’s that are currently worn by NHL teams.  I’m basing my selection upon how the jersey represents the team name and how the logo and colors work to combine to make a good jersey.  You can bet that the Stars are going to make this list!!

  1. San Jose Sharks – So surprisingly enough the Dallas Stars aren’t number one…Instead I chose the Sharks.  I really like this jersey because it is actually a cool jersey (and there aren’t many!)  The colors work well and the Shark on the front biting the hockey stick is a cool graphic.

2.  Dallas Stars – So now to my favorite team…This jersey is simple but            still incorporates all the things that a jersey should have.  They have              their name on the jersey, with a Star in place of the “A”, and the colors          also blend very well!  (I especially like the white jersey!)

3. New Jersey Devils – So I chose the Devils for the same reason I chose       the Stars, they both have all of the elements I believe make a good jersey.     The jersey combines their team location and name into one cool graphic.     The colors aren’t so special but they still work.

4. Colorado Avalanche – The Avalanche have a simply jersey that still         incorporates the team and has a cool graphic to go along with it.  I also       like it because the colors of the jersey is unique to the NHL.

5. Washington Capitals – The last jersey I chose was the Washington         Capital jersey.  I chose it mainly because of the cool graphic that is                 incorporated into the name of the team.  The colors or pretty normal so         this jersey was mainly chosen due to its cool graphic.

So there you have it, my top 5 best NHL jerseys!!  So what do you think, did I miss a great one or maybe I put up an ugly one, let me know??

Bye Bye Turco!

GM Joe Nieuwendyk officially stated today that the Stars would not be resigning Marty Turco.  Well I can’t say that this is any kind of shock I’m pretty sure everyone saw this coming especially after the Stars acquired Kari Lehtonen.  In his official press release Nieuwendyk thanked Turco for his 9 years of service.  Now as much as agree with the GM that this is the right move for the Stars, it is hard to say goodbye to Turco after all the great things he’s done for the team.

Here is a look at Turco’s NHL career with the Dallas Stars:

GP W L T OTL MIN GA SO GAA SV%
509 262 154 26 37 29,063 1118 40 2.31 0.911

Overall, Turco has been a great asset to the team and he will be missed.  But I’m also intrigued to see how Kari Lehtonen will do as head goalie next season.  He was pretty impressive those last few games of the season so he should be good next season!

So here are a few pics of the Great Goalie in action!!

Last Saturday night the Stars played their final game of the season against the Minnesota Wild….and won!!!  The Stars won in a shootout in which my favorite Benn scored the winning goal!!  The score going into overtime was 3-3 with Ott making two goals and Morrow making the other goal.  Overall the game was fairly exciting and not a bad way for the Stars to finish out their season.

During the first period of the game the Wild fans gave Modano another long and deserving standing ovation!!!  It was nice to see that Modano’s home town was right there with him cheering him on in his potential last game!!  It was also funny to hear that every time Modano got the puck the crowd started to go nuts, even though he might have scored on their own team…they didn’t care they just wanted him to score.  Sadly, he didn’t, but that’s okay because of his kick-ass game last Thursday!!!

Another touching aspect of the game was at the end of the game Modano was yet again named the top star of the night, pretty cool!!!  Also, at the end of the game Modano came back onto the ice and wore his original jersey of the Minnesota North Stars.  Here are two pictures one taken on Saturday the other taken on Modano’s draft day!!  (I gotta say he looks EXTREMELY better now than he did back then!!!)

Here is the video of Modano tying the score against the Ducks just minutes after his very emotional standing ovation!  Like I have said before the perfect game for him!

Here is the video of Modano scoring a shootout goal which helped the Stars win against the Ducks!!

These videos are awesome, but it’s kind of sad to think that these might be the last time we see him score any career goals.

Here is the entire video of the standing ovation that the Stars fans gave Mike Modano on his potential last home game.  It is pretty emotional!

So last night was one of the best games I have ever seen…it was emotional, it was fun, and above all it was memorable!!  I’m not ashamed to say that I teared up during the 3 minute standing ovation for Modano!!  Seeing him get emotional, at what could be his last home game with the Stars, was just such a wonderful memory that will always be embedded into my brain!  This was not the only reason the game was so amazing, what made it better was due to the fact that it was because of Modano and his line (Benn and Lehtinen) that the Stars won!!  The best minutes of the game came towards the end when the Stars were down 2-1 and Modano scored the goal that tied the game leading to a shootout!!  It was an amazing end of the regulation game and I was jumping up and down in my room for the better part of the last period especially during Modano’s standing ovation!  During the shootout, Richards was the first one up and didn’t get the puck past the goalie, so then shortly after came Modano’s turn.  While Modano starting to skate with the puck the entire arena went still, no one was talking and then suddenly the only thing you hear is Modano’s puck hit the goal post and bounce into the net…..and the crowd went nuts!!!!   It was insane, an all around uproar rushed through the arena and the widest smile on Modano’s face appeared when he realized that the Star’s can pull this win off!!  So last but not least another Stars Vet. Jere Lehtinen takes his puck and skates towards the opposing goal, knowing that this goal would win it for the Stars…and suddenly he blasts the puck in past the goalie deciding the win would go to the Stars!!!!!  It was amazing, the players were enthralled with the uproar from the crowd and Modano yet again received a standing ovation and again got emotional (as did I!).

After the game they players remained on the ice to sign their jersey’s and take pictures with a chosen fan!!  It was painful to watch as some other dude was lucky enough to get Jamie Benn’s jersey, that asshole!!!  Anyway, during the jersey signing the other players stayed with Modano as he took an enormous amount of pictures with various fans and other players.  It was really bittersweet to see this happen, mainly because Modano couldn’t have ended his career with a better game.  It was sad to think that this may have been his last home game but the way it ended was PERFECT!!  As a whole it could not have gone any better for Modano!!

Also, during the jersey signing Turco was also getting high praises although nothing compared to Modano’s praises but I didn’t expect them to be.  To me it looked as if Turco was a little annoyed with the reception for Modano, because he didn’t get near the amount of praise from the crowd.  But if you ask me the game last night should, and was, all about Modano!

Here are a look at some of the highlights from last night!!  I will try to post a video of some other highlights from last night.

All in all I will always remember this game and it couldn’t have been more perfect!!  You know you have a real man when he can cry, I gotta say its kind of hot!!  But, in all seriousness Mike Modano is and will always be the face of the Dallas Stars!!  He is a spectacular hockey player and an even more amazing person!!  The Stars won’t be the same without him!!

By the way I can’t end this post without mentioning that the first goal of the game came from my boy Benn with an amazing assist from Modano and Lehtinen!

So it is official the Stars wont being going to the playoffs for the second season in a row.  It became official when the Avalanche won their last game on Sunday.  So now the remaining three games don’t really matter to the Stars except that now the team will test out some new players, like another goalie by the name of Climie.  So I guess tonight we might see some new players.

Also, these remaining games might be the last for a few of the players, like Modano, Turco, and J. Lehtinen.  These three might have there last games with the Stars because all of their contracts expire at the end of the season.  Now I know that for Modano his decision will be anounced during the summer, I jsut hope it is the right one!!  As for Turco, I think these three games will be his last with the Stars, now that they are grooming K. Lehtonen for lead goalie, I think Turco might just retire.  Now for J. Lehtinen, Coach Crawford has said that he would be glad to have him back…I’m not so sure if thats a good idea.  Yea sure he is a pretty consistent player but that doens’t work if your consistently bad!!  He just has not been the best player these past couple seasons.

By the way, Toby Peterson got his contract extended for 2 years!!!  That’s pretty good, I think he is valuable center at this point, we will see how he does next season.

Anyway the Stars play the Blackhawks tonight at 7:30pm!  Hopefully they play a great game even thought they wont be in the playoffs this season…

Way to go Benn!!!!!  So last night the Stars played the Oilers at home and beat the crap out of them!!  The final score was 6-3, and it was kind of funny because the Stars scored 3 in the first period.  Then the Oilers scored 3 times in the second period, finally the Stars scored their remaining 3 goals in the last period.  My boy Benn scored 2 of the goals in the last period, both of them assisted by MODANO!!  They were both great plays!  The rest of the goals came from Richards, Ribeiro, Lehtinen, and Neal.  The game was quite good, and Kari Lehtonen was in the net for the Stars.  Overall the player of the game HAD to be Jamie Benn!!!  He was great not only scoring 2 of the goals but also handling the puck with amazing skill!!

Now this win technically keeps the Stars in the running for the playoffs, but they need to keep winning their games to keep the dream alive.  Hopefully they will win against the Blues tonight and therefore keep the dream alive!!!   Also, with last nights two goals Benn now has 21 goals in his rookie year and is still in contention for the Calder trophy!!  Also, Modano reached his 800th career assist with the amazing setup he gave Benn on his first goal, the crowd gave him a standing ovation for his achievement!!  It was great!

Here is the team celebrating Benn’s second goal of the night!!

Alright I’m off the watch the Stars and the Blues game!!  Hopefully it’s a great win for the Stars!!!

So this is kind of a tough decision because the Stars really didn’t play all that well during March….but I’m going to go with Steve Ott!!  Since his emergency appendectomy he has scored 8 goals in March, 3 of them being a hat trick!!  Now Ott is a fantastic enforcer, considering he has spent 147 minutes in the box this season!  Normally Ott isn’t known for is shooting skills, but this last month he impressed most by pulling off a hat trick last night against the Sharks!  He has played great since coming back from his surgery and will finish out the season with a big bang!!  Thankfully the Stars extended his contract to 4 years, so there will be plenty to see of Ott in the upcoming seasons.

So there you have it Steve Ott is the player of the Month for April!!

Here is a picture of the ice after Ott received his first career Hat Trick against the San Jose Sharks, last night!!
